I Cut People was started in 2005 by Nicholas Smith. From 2003-2004, Nicholas created an abundance of sound
and visual collage under a variety of different aliases. But, it wasn't until an unidentified passerby wrote
"I Cut People" on his dirt encrusted car that Nicholas chose this aptly titled stage name.
I Cut People works in many different mediums ranging from audio to video/animation to visual collage. Over
the years, he has created videos for such artists as: Girl Talk, gITAr, Ellipse Elkshow, and NATO. He has
released a total of 4 albums under the I Cut People name since 2005. In 2009, after completing his most
recent album "The Inside Story" (in which he sampled 139 movies), I Cut People decided to solely use the
film and entertainment industry as his source material. The Inside Story was unique because he elaborated
on the stories he told through his cut-ups in articles that encompassed the album's artwork (which was
designed to look like a People magazine). He now describes his audio as the "National Enquirer of cut-up music."
Most of I Cut People's work is transformative. He recycles both images and sound, and rearranging them
to create new and interesting works of art.
Aside from his solo project, I Cut People is also in the cut-up group gITAr with his long-time friend
and ally Ellipse Elkshow. gITAr is a cut-up project that focuses on current events pertaining to
political & social issues. They recently signed to the label Seeland Records (owned and operated by
Negativland) in 2007. Their album "Stuffed" is set to be released in mid 2010. The album will also
be released on I Cut People and Ellipse Elkshow's cut-up label Buildings Building Themself(VS) Media Machine.
